New plant discovery reveals a wooly mystery of nature

In the rugged beauty of Big Bend National Park, where the sun paints the mountains gold and desert winds whisper through endless stretches of wild terrain, a tiny, peculiar plant has quietly made a grand entrance into the world of science.

This charming botanical marvel—nicknamed the “wooly devil”—has recently been confirmed as both a brand-new species and genus, a rare event that has delighted botanists and nature lovers alike.

Officially named Ovicula biradiata, the wooly devil is not just another addition to the flora of Texas. It represents a scientific milestone, offering a fresh reminder that even in well-explored places, nature still holds secrets waiting to be found.

A Casual Hike Leads to a Scientific Breakthrough

The story behind this discovery begins with two women exploring the desert trails of Big Bend. Deb Manley, a longtime park volunteer, was hiking alongside Cathy Hoyt, the park’s interpretive operations supervisor.

They noticed a small, hairy plant with oddly shaped florets that resembled tiny horns—something neither had seen before. Intrigued, Manley snapped a photo and uploaded it to the iNaturalist app, a digital community where amateur and professional naturalists share sightings.

That simple act set off a chain of curiosity. Isaac Lichter Marck, a postdoctoral research fellow at the California Academy of Sciences, was one of several scientists who spotted the post and recognized something extraordinary. The plant didn’t look like anything previously recorded—not just in the region, but anywhere.

“It had the telltale look of the sunflower family,” Lichter Marck said. “But when we examined it more closely, nothing quite matched. It simply didn’t fit in any known genus.”

What Makes the Wooly Devil So Unique?

At first glance, Ovicula biradiata might not seem impressive. It’s a small plant, barely growing more than three inches wide, but its appearance is unlike anything else in the sunflower family.

The entire plant is covered in soft, wool-like hairs that help it retain moisture and possibly protect it from desert predators. Its ray florets—the outermost petals of a daisy-like flower—appear in pairs, giving the illusion of tiny horns, which inspired the common name “wooly devil.”

Scientists conducted detailed DNA testing and used scanning electron microscopes to study its microscopic structure. What they found confirmed their suspicions: this was not just a new species, but a new genus altogether. That’s an incredibly rare find in modern botany.

The genus name Ovicula means “little egg” in Latin—likely a nod to the plant’s compact, rounded form—while biradiata refers to the two ray florets that give it its devilish silhouette.

A Fragile Treasure in a Changing World

So far, this unusual plant has only been found in three small areas within the park’s remote desert ecosystem, part of the greater Chihuahuan Desert. This limited range, while exciting from a conservation standpoint, also raises concerns.

With climate change altering rainfall patterns and increasing average temperatures, plants like the wooly devil could face real threats to survival. Although desert species are typically resilient, they are also finely tuned to specific environmental conditions.

“People think desert plants are tough, and they are,” said Lichter Marck. “But many rely on rare ‘good rain years’ to bloom and reproduce. If those years become less frequent, some species may struggle to survive.”

It’s a humbling reminder that even the smallest, most overlooked life forms can be indicators of broader environmental changes.

Community Science: Ordinary People Making Extraordinary Contributions

This story wouldn’t exist without the power of community science. Platforms like iNaturalist have changed the way discoveries happen, allowing everyday people to take part in scientific observation and research.

Deb Manley and Cathy Hoyt weren’t out on a formal expedition. They were simply enjoying the park, doing what countless visitors do every year. Their curiosity and willingness to share what they found played a crucial role in this discovery.

“It’s empowering,” Hoyt later said. “You don’t need a lab coat or a PhD to make a difference. Just pay attention, ask questions, and stay curious.”

Community-driven platforms are becoming vital tools for conservation, too—especially as more species face habitat loss. By crowdsourcing observations, scientists can gather data much faster than traditional field surveys allow.
